Travel Safety in South Sudan – Essential Tips & Guidelines for Visitors

South Sudan has been recorded as one of the countries with ongoing civil wars, especially near the borders. Foreign nationals have been victims of rape, sexual assault, murder, robbery, and other crimes.

Armed conflict is still ongoing between the ruling government and ethnic groups, where cattle raids happen throughout the country, leading to violence. It should be noted that almost everyone owns a gun in South Sudan, which is very alarming.

Many journalists have been killed in this country, and it is very difficult to trace the criminals. Reporting in South Sudan without proper documentation from the South Sudanese media is illegal, so such crimes are often ignored.

It should also be noted that the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency consular services to its citizens in South Sudan. That is why, if you are working in this country, your family members are not allowed to accompany you.

Security & Restrictions

This country is under strict restrictions. A curfew is in place, and armed vehicles are used for patrolling. Official travel outside Juba is very limited due to high crime rates, which restrict freedom of movement.

People are only allowed to move within a small area near the embassy and during daytime hours only.

If you are traveling outside Juba, make sure to carry medical equipment and travel with a minimum of two vehicles. Avoid demonstrations and public gatherings, as even those that appear peaceful can turn violent.

Be aware that photography in public is restricted, and you must have official authorization to take pictures. Ensure you follow all guidelines.

This situation is unfortunate, but a will should be prepared in case of any unexpected attack, and beneficiaries should be clearly stated for insurance purposes.

You should also establish your own security plan and keep your family informed about your well-being. If necessary, leave DNA samples with your medical provider so your family can access them in case of an emergency.

South Sudan has dusty roads outside Juba with no streetlights, making sudden attacks easy. However, armed patrol officers are assigned to ensure safety.

Unfortunately, in many cases, they also physically abuse women at security checkpoints.

Make a wise decision when choosing a country for safari travel.
