Nimule National Park – South Sudan’s Wildlife Sanctuary Along the White Nile

Nimule National Park is located in the extreme southern part of South Sudan, bordering Uganda. The White Nile forms the eastern boundary of the park, while the Kayu River flows through the park from the Ugandan border to the White Nile.

This river highlights the green savannah vegetation, which is divided into savannah, Aegyptiaca, and Balanites that cover the hills. The riverine woodland, found along both permanent and seasonal watercourses, is made up of Acacia sieberiana and Borassus aethiopum.

From the airport, you can travel to Nimule on your own, but if you get lost, you can ask local citizens for directions. However, in most cases, the tour company you booked with will pick you up in a safari car and take you to your final destination.

It is always advised to carry your travel documents for security purposes because you can easily be deported if found without them. Before entering South Sudan, you should inform your home country’s embassy about your journey, and your close relatives should also be aware.

You can get a one-day permit for USD 70, which is obtained at the headquarters or in Nimule if you are driving yourself. Filming is not allowed without permission or a filming permit, so always follow the rules and regulations for your safety.

Tourist Activities – Top Things to do in Nimule National Park

  • Boat Trip: The waters of the park are home to hippos and crocodiles, which is why floating on water is best done through a boat cruise, which costs 150 SSP. After the boat ride, you can walk through the park and see herbivores such as rhinos, buffalos, and elephants. Other animals like leopards and lions are present, but some species are not easily seen, which is why the season in which you visit Nimule National Park matters a lot.
  • See Falls and Rapids: The journey to the falls is long, which is why safari cars are recommended. The sound of the flowing water welcomes you as you approach the falls, and when you finally arrive, the dazzling scenery unfolds before your eyes, showcasing the beauty of the area. Missing this visit means missing out on the journey to a truly mysterious land.
  • Nature Walk and Game Drives: A safari car is commonly used to tour the park, but most people prefer walking on foot, which is enjoyable when you have a guide to show you where to go and where to stop. Carrying drinks is a must due to the scorching heat in South Sudan, which may be uncomfortable for some visitors.

Accommodation & Dining – Where to Stay in Nimule National Park

There is a guesthouse called Horizon near Nimule, which has 20 rooms. It provides a single meal of chips and chicken per day, and if you need an extra meal, you will have to travel into town.

However, this should not worry you if you have a car or booked with the right safari company, as they will guide you on what to do. The rooms cost 100 SSP per person per night.

The geysers do not work, and the power supply lasts only until 1:00 AM.

Before reaching Nimule, probably in the town area, there is a place called Smart Pub that offers delicious meals such as smoked chicken, meat, curry, fish, and cold drinks, including beer and wine, at reasonable prices. You can enjoy your meal while watching sports and listening to calming music in the background.

Nimule National Park is the best safari destination you should visit whenever you are in South Sudan.
