There are a variety of national parks in South Sudan, located in rural areas near different tribes. These parks include:
Lantoto National Park
Lantoto is found in Central Equatoria State and is home to giants of the jungle, such as lions and elephants. An elephant’s foot can crush a safari car, so drivers should be careful while inside the park.
Crocodiles, which feed on meat, are dangerous creatures that should never be approached. Snakes, some of which are poisonous, can attack people, especially in bushy areas, so visitors should wear safari shoes or gumboots for protection.
Always carry a first aid kit and have full knowledge of how to use it. Some important items to include are bandages, scissors, safety pins, cotton, and antiseptic spirit, among others.
Other species found in the park include buffaloes, rhinos, monkeys, and chimpanzees, mostly in forested areas. If visiting certain areas, do not feed the animals, as they may become aggressive.
The easiest way to reach Lantoto National Park is by road transport, though air transport is available for those with a moderate or luxury budget.
The roads leading to the park are tarmac, and in most cases, visitors are picked up from the airport and taken to their final destination.
However, some tourists prefer getting a permit and driving themselves to the park.
Nimule National Park
Traveling allows you to experience beauty, and one such place is Nimule National Park. Many activities are available, including:
- Nature Walks – Tourists walk through the park and enjoy the natural surroundings.
- Game Drives – This is the most preferred activity, as it is considered safer and less tiring than a nature walk. Safari cars have mini-refrigerators stocked with drinks, allowing visitors to enjoy refreshments while watching herbivores, carnivores, reptiles, primates, and colorful birds.
- Interaction with the Locals – Meeting the local people is a great experience. Some tourists donate food, water, or medical supplies to help those in need. The tribes in this area are friendly and welcoming, often greeting visitors with traditional dances and storytelling about their history and way of life. Tourists are even allowed to take photos near their cattle.
For these reasons, Nimule National Park should always be included in your safari itinerary.
Shambe Nature Reserve
Shambe Nature Reserve is one of the best bird-watching destinations, hosting thousands of bird species from around the world.
Tourists may want to film their experience, but filming without a permit is a crime due to political instability in South Sudan. The filming permit process is expensive but necessary.
Tour companies can assist in arranging permits.
Travelers must also have an electronic visa and carry all required documents if they are not citizens. For safety reasons, visitors should avoid restricted areas, as past raids have resulted in deaths.
It is advised to focus on your planned activities and return safely to your home country.
Random National Park
This unique park is still under establishment and is located at the border between Sudan and South Sudan. Ownership disputes have led to conflicts, but peace agreements were signed to ensure that South Sudan retains what belongs to it.
Unfortunately, many wild species, including elephants, gazelles, and antelopes, have migrated to more peaceful areas due to the ongoing conflicts.
Additionally, poachers have caused the extinction of some species, but protective measures are now in place to preserve the remaining wildlife.
Since tourism is still developing in South Sudan, accommodations are found in nearby towns. However, visitors who wish to sleep inside the park can stay in well-organized tents with clean and comfortable bedding, all at an affordable price.
Southern National Park
Southern National Park was established in 1939 and has a beautiful drainage system, including the Sue River, Gel River, and Ibba River, which flows through the center of the park.
Activities in this park include:
- Game Drives
- Boat Trips
- Nature Walks
- Camping – This is a favorite activity, as it allows tourists to interact and share experiences around the campfire.
Bandingilo National Park
This pristine park is located in southeastern South Sudan and is known for its rich diversity of plants and animals. It has remarkable features such as:
- The Sudd Swamp
- Lush Green Vegetation
- Beautiful Landscapes
Boma National Park
Boma National Park, also in southeastern South Sudan, covers 22,800 square kilometers in the heart of the Upper Great Nile region.
