John Garang Mausoleum – John Garang is remembered as an important figure in South Sudan’s history. A mausoleum was built in his honor to recognize the good things he did for the people.
His gravesite is well decorated with sparkling tiles on the floor and angelic flowers of different colors placed around the grave and in the gardens.
The site is enclosed by a strong fence and a gate with thick bars, guarded by strict security to prevent theft or tampering. The path across the street that passes through the site is reserved for VIPs and official speakers.
Behind his vast field, other structures meant for public activities have been developed, such as Freedom Hall, which hosts concerts and events.
There were also plans to construct a National Archives building and a National Museum, but due to political instability, these projects were disrupted, slowing the country’s growth and development.
Many people visit this place because of John Garang’s role in the struggle for liberation, which led to the signing of the Peace Agreement and the country gaining independence on July 2011.
His name remains respected, with some institutions named after him, such as the John Garang Institute of Science and Technology in Bor Freedom Square, which is dedicated to public events, rallies, and celebrations.
Nearby, important buildings were constructed, including the National Parliament and the Ministries Complex, built between 1974 and 1978.
Sadly, John Garang did not witness his country’s independence, as he died in a helicopter crash that many believe was an assassination. This happened just after he was sworn in as the First Vice President of South Sudan.
His death caused shock and horror among the people, leading to violent clashes between Northern and Southern forces in Khartoum and Juba, where 130 people lost their lives and many others were left wounded.
After his death, Salva Kiir Mayardit succeeded him and is still serving as President of South Sudan. Despite this tragedy, Garang’s legacy remains strong, and he is honored for his contributions.
Even his gravesite witnessed battles between rebels of the SPLA, who tried to seize control after his death, but they failed, as the country remained protected from East to West.
Great men from the past who made history should always be remembered and honored.
May the late John Garang rest in peace (RIP).
