Bor Freedom Square – South Sudan’s Historic Landmark of Unity & Culture

Bor Freedom Square was once an ivory trading post in the 1860s. Over time, it grew into a regional hub in the 19th century, eventually blossoming into a government station in 1874 under the Turkiyah Government.

It holds a legacy as the epicenter of the national liberation revolution, a history that still stands strong today.

This historical heritage site preserves statues of liberators and destroyed weapons, showcasing the rich history of South Sudan. These artifacts attract tourists from all over the world, making Bor Freedom Square one of the mighty symbols of national pride.

Bor Freedom Square is not only famous for its history, but it is also known for being the seat of the Bor Diocese in the Episcopal Church of Sudan.

Additionally, Bor Wrestling takes place here, where energetic men compete as the roaring crowd cheers them on. This traditional sport helps unite people, while the government examines historical narratives and discusses how citizens should connect with their past while adapting to the present.

These discussions became especially relevant after the formal cessation of hostilities between the Government of South Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.
