About Juba City
Juba City is the capital of South Sudan, hosting a variety of political, economic, and social activities. It became the capital in 2011 after the country gained independence.
However, the government has considered building a new capital near water bodies for better infrastructure.
Despite these plans, Juba remains the economic hub of South Sudan. Over the past five years, the city has grown rapidly, attracting merchants from Northern Sudan and East Africa.
However, this growth was disrupted by the civil war in 2013, leading to widespread conflict where many citizens armed themselves.
Gunfire became commonplace, though it was shocking for foreign visitors, many of whom fled back to their home countries for safety.
With time, Juba recovered, and reconstruction efforts helped restore its architecture and economy.
Today, the city continues to develop, though many traders take their profits elsewhere instead of investing in local businesses.
Things to Do in Juba City
Visit Top Tourist Sites: Juba has several popular attractions, including:
- John Garang Mausoleum – The final resting place of Dr. John Garang, a freedom fighter who played a key role in South Sudan’s independence. Unfortunately, he died before the country gained its freedom, but the government declared South Sudan’s independence near his tomb, making it a significant tourist site.
- Marketplaces – Experience the bustling local markets, where people from different countries come to trade and shop. Notable markets include: Konyo Konyo Market – A popular market selling a variety of goods. Nile Special Beer Bottling Plant – Visit the factory where South Sudan’s famous Nile Special Beer is produced.
Do not take photographs of public places, military areas, or government buildings in Juba. If caught, you could be fined, imprisoned, or deported. These restrictions are in place due to political instability in the country.
